artist statement

Brushes. Easel. Canvas. Colors. I empty myself of thoughts and immediately respond to what I see. Quickly, I make a gestural sketch on the canvas and then begin to paint. I stay flexible, open; I improvise, and if I think at all, it is through touch, color, and always for the eye. I don't impose a story on the scene, I follow the things happening at the scene. I keep myself free to add or eliminate details, always striving to be accurate and make the scene believable. I use paint straight from the tube which keeps the colors pure and gives them their greatest contrast and intensity. Details arrange themselves, colors create a fleeting moment, and the picture completes itself.
